The Devil

the devil

The 'I can quit anytime' card. He's not evil. He's just whatever you keep going back to that you know isn't great.

Upright The Devil

The Devil is the card of attachment, bondage, and the things we choose to stay chained to even though the chains aren't locked. Addiction, obsession, a relationship you keep returning to, a story about yourself that keeps you small. The Devil's joke is that you have the key.

Drawing The Devil often means you're being asked to look squarely at what you're avoiding looking at. The chain is in your hand. It always was. The question is whether you're ready to put it down.

The chain is in your hand. It always was.

Reversed The Devil

Reversed, The Devil is the moment of release: the chain dropped, the pattern broken, the spell lifted. It can also mean you're starting to see clearly what was hidden, even if you haven't acted on the seeing yet.

It can occasionally signal a different kind of trap: spiritual bypass, using growth language to avoid real change. The Devil reversed asks whether you're actually free, or just better at describing the cage.
