The Nine of Cups is sometimes called the wish card. A figure sits proudly in front of nine arranged cups, contented, satisfied, his fortune visible. The Nine asks you to be specific about what you want, and to receive it when it arrives.

Reversed, the Nine of Cups is wishing without specificity. You're holding a vague desire and waiting for the universe to figure it out. The card reversed asks for the actual sentence.
It can also indicate getting what you wanted and discovering it wasn't what you actually wanted. The Nine reversed isn't punishment; it's information.
